Why we should mind our Language

Foreign languages have dropped out of the top ten GCSE subjects for the first time since 2002. French, for example, has been replaced with Religious Studies. The decline in language A Levels is equally steep. Only 13,850 students took A Level French this year, a drop of more than 3 per cent in just 12 months. In contrast, more complex languages such as Chinese, Japanese and Arabic are increasing in popularity, but only slightly. The same impact can be felt at degree level – just 28,500 of nearly 2 million undergraduates at British universities are studying languages.

It’s the concept of personalised learning and education that has meant that language learning is seen as a difficult subject in comparison to art, drama, media or marketing. Investment in language learning does not always bring immediate results and needs perseverance. However, it is important to remember that the potential rewards are considerable: language skills increase employment prospects at a time when jobs are particularly hard to come by.

The growing number of young people leaving school or university with no foreign language skills and therefore no capability to translate even the most basic texts, will struggle when they enter the job market and come into direct competition with foreign graduates who are often trilingual. It will also weaken the UK’s position in world markets as British exporters try to compete with countries who communicate easily in the language of their customers.

As a first step, it is important to find an organisation that will support all your long-term language translation and communication needs. With over 25 years’ experience of supporting global companies to trade successfully across the world, Comtec Translations is the perfect business partner for all your foreign language translation requirements including French, German, Spanish and Arabic, to name but a few.
