FAQ's

What is eLearning localisation?

eLearning localisation is the process of adapting and customising eLearning content including courses, modules and materials to suit the cultural, linguistic and educational needs of a specific target audience or region. eLearning localisation ensures that your online courses are culturally sensitive and relevant to your target audience, leading to better engagement, comprehension and learning outcomes.

What types of eLearning content can be localised?

Virtually all types of eLearning content can be localised. This includes text, audio, video, graphics, interactive elements, downloadable resources, quizzes and more.

My eLearning content has been built using an authoring tool. Can it be localised?

All standard authoring tools can be localised, including Storyline, Evolve, Rise and Adapt. A full end-to-end localisation can be delivered so that you have a fully translated SCORM package ready to upload to your or your client’s LMS

How long does it take to localise an eLearning course?

The time required for eLearning localisation depends on the length of the course and the number of languages.  A 15-minute course with minimal additional assets (e.g. videos) can be completed within 1-2 weeks; a longer course with more complex services (such as voiceover) will require more time to complete. A bespoke delivery schedule will be organised to meet your specific deadline requirements.

How much does eLearning localisation cost?

The cost of eLearning localisation varies depending on various factors such as:

  • Course duration (which in turn will impact word count for translation)
  • Language combinations required
  • Content complexity, including functionality of your course and additional assets for localisation (e.g. videos, imagery, etc.)

Is eLearning localisation only for multinational corporations?

No, eLearning localisation is beneficial for any organisation or educational institution that wants to reach a diverse audience. It can be used by businesses, universities, nonprofits and more. If you are an eLearning agency looking to broaden your base of international clients, partnering with Comtec will allow you to include  localisation support in your service offering.

Can eLearning localisation be updated or revised?

Yes, eLearning localisation can be updated or revised as needed. When there are changes to the content or new courses, translation memory technology ensures we can make the necessary adjustments to keep the material up to date and relevant, at minimal additional cost and time.

Best practices in eLearning localisation

When thinking about eLearning localisation for global markets, it’s important to firstly understand your target audience. What are their learning preferences? How familiar and relevant is the source content to them? Getting your eLearning content ready for localisation, for example by removing elements that might only make sense in your original context, can save you a lot of time and effort later on in the project.

Next, it’s important to choose a localisation partner who you can really trust – somebody who specialises in eLearning linguistic services. They’ll be familiar with the demands of your project and have tools and processes already set up to help you produce the best quality translations quickly and with minimum fuss.

Finally, make sure that your internal sign-off processes are running as smoothly as possible. We hear so often that managing translations can be a real headache for them, so we’ve developed a range of tools and technologies specifically to meet the needs of our eLearning and L&D clients.

For example, a tool like a website connector, that automatically integrates with your content management system to grab text to be translated can save you hours, not to mention reduce human errors from cutting and pasting text.

How does eLearning localisation differ from simple translation?

Translation tends to mean the literal swapping of words from one language to another. It doesn’t always take into account the nuances of context, references or examples.

Localisation is when you fully adapt a piece of content so that nothing gets lost in translation.

Let’s take the idiom “raining cats and dogs” as an example. If you were to translate that literally, it probably wouldn’t make sense to someone whose first language isn’t English, and you’d need to find the equivalent saying or make the English original version more translation-friendly.

If you have training material that already exists in English, you probably want to localise it for your target audience, rather than simply translate it.

What languages do you support for eLearning localisation?

We support over 200 languages worldwide through our network of more than 4,000 professional linguists. There isn’t anything we can’t do!

Whether you choose to use our AI-based machine translation service (always with some level of human proof-reading) or use human linguists from start to finish, we’re confident we can handle your requirements and deliver the highest quality work on time and in budget.
