Translations you can trust
We’re fanatical about quality. It’s what sets us apart and guides everything we do. We know that working with a translation partner requires trust. It’s a bit like buying a friend a cake and not knowing if it’s any good until you see them take the first bite.
That’s why we have put our energy into not only working with the best linguists but developing proven processes that ensure each project is delivered to the highest standard. After all, the proof is in the pudding.
“Very few of our team have any second language, which makes it difficult to review translations. This initial concern quickly disappeared though as we heard feedback from our clients. Comtec’s use of native-language speakers ensures incredibly high quality, far beyond what our clients have been used to, to the point that we don’t need to worry about quality assurance.”
Ross Garner, Head of Learning Experience at Emerald Works
How do we define quality in translations?
Quality to us goes far beyond the words on the page (or video).
We consider syntax, flow and tone of voice. We ensure that jokes get a laugh and creative ideas impress.
It’s not just perfect grammar and mitigating mistakes. Quality translations meet the content purpose and resonate with the audience, regardless of language.
Here are a few of the ways that we guarantee high-quality translations:
We believe in our systems. But as much as we’d like you to take our word for it, we’ve been certified by the ISO – just in case. Our certifications include
- ISO 9001:2015: an international standard that specifies requirements for a quality management system (QMS)
- ISO 17100:2015: internationally recognised standard for companies within the translation industry. It recognises that its holders recruit the highest calibre of linguists with specialist knowledge appropriate to different subject areas and who translate into their mother tongue only.
Choosing the best translators for the job
Regardless of where they call home, our translators are part of our team. Whilst they might be scattered across the globe, they are an integral part of Comtec and are just as passionate about quality as we are.
Before being considered to work with us, each linguist has to meet our high criteria: relevant qualifications, minimum 5 years’ experience, proof of specialist subjects and references. Each linguist also undergoes a sample translation to test their ability. We continue to assess translators throughout their time with us.
All our professional translators work only into their native language and must have a specialist understanding of particular industry sectors and the associated terminology, as well as in-depth cultural knowledge of the target countries.
This means we create your translation A-team with the right expertise in the language, culture and sector
Interpreter Assessment and Selection
Our interpreters adhere to a stringent Code of Conduct that guarantees the highest standards of accuracy, impartiality, confidentiality and cultural sensitivity.
All our interpreters are affiliated to professional bodies including the AIIC, National Register of Public Service Interpreters, Institute of Translation and Interpreting and Institute of Linguists. They must also hold appropriate qualifications and outstanding references.
Interpreters are hand-picked against your project needs. We’ll find someone with the right subject expertise and experience of interpreting in a similar environment, whether that’s facilitation at a business meeting, community interpreting or large multilingual conferences.
Like our linguists, we constantly assess our interpreters gaining feedback after every session.
Ensuring the best results
All projects are subject to stringent quality checks where we assess content based on a number of key linguistic criteria including spelling, syntax, vocabulary and technical terminology. We then have additional criteria depending on the type of content and how it will be used. Here are a few examples.
We assess whether the technical terminology has been translated correctly and whether the linguists have adhered to any specific glossaries previously agreed with the client.
We’ll often work with the client to establish an approved glossary at the start of working together which is then regularly reviewed and expanded on as more projects are completed. This ensures complete consistency in the use of technical terms across all content.
We look at whether it’s been localised sufficiently to fit with the local culture. Is the tone of voice and style appropriate for the target market? We work with the client to establish a clear style guide which is used as a basis to assess all on-going projects. This is alongside, of course, confirming that brand or product names don’t have any unintended meanings or associations!
It’s not just about the words and pictures, the subtitling and voiceover for the audio content has to be in sync and the overall functionality has to be checked. Most importantly, we check whether the learning still resonates with the target audience in the new language and whether any further cultural adaptations are needed.
