What guides us
Our values are simple. We believe that:
- Every decision, large or small, should consider the planet.
- Transparency and accountability matter.
- Innovation should always support sustainability.
- As a B Corp, we should always look for ways to improve our operations for our team, clients, the wider industry and the environment.
Comtec and the environment
Our climate change goals and measurement
We recognise the urgency of the climate crisis and have committed through the SME Climate Hub to ambitious targets that support the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5℃:
- Reduce our emissions by half by 2030 (incl. scopes 1, 2 and business travel)
- Reach net zero by 2040 (incl. scopes 1, 2 and 3)
- Share our progress every year
We’re also proud to be part of the UN-backed Race to Zero campaign and work alongside other businesses taking meaningful climate action.
You can download our Carbon Reduction Plan here.
Other actions we are taking
To be the most environmentally responsible and transparent employer and partner we can be, we’re already taking steps across several areas:
- We’ve measured our emissions since 2021, with targets set from a 2022 baseline year. View our Carbon Emission Reports here.
- We worked with a third-party Sustainability Consultant to write a PPN 06/21 aligned Carbon Reduction Plan.
- We have an internal B Keeper Steering Committee to take continuous action towards our net zero goals.
- We support flexible working to reduce commuting emissions.
- Our travel policy encourages low-carbon choices.
- We’ve reduced printing, switched to B Corp Certified suppliers and introduced composting at our office.
- We screen all suppliers, including technology and AI providers, for their environmental and social performance and have sent a supplier letter to encourage them to take action towards net zero.

Comtec & AI
Responsible use of AI
AI is changing the localisation industry, and to stay competitive, we are exploring its potential while staying focused on transparency, ethics, sustainability and, most importantly, people.
Our approach is led by Head of Technology Mark Jones and Co-Owner and CTO Dan Howe, with input from Risk Evolves and Planet A, our external partners in compliance and sustainability.
We are proud to be:
- A Certified B Corporation
- ISO 27001, 9001, 17100 and 18587 certified
- Working with Climate Essentials, Earthly, Planet A and Risk Evolves
Clara and Pronto: Responsibly developed AI tools
Our proprietary AI tools were developed with sustainability and ethics in mind:
- Pronto is our machine translation platform, with built-in post-editing and the option for review by a human linguist (this service is called “Pronto Pro Edit”)
- Clara is our AI content creation tool for multilingual marketing copy. It learns your brand voice, and everything it produces can be reviewed by an expert linguist.
Together, they reflect our hybrid model: using AI where it adds value, with people involved at every stage to ensure quality and responsibility.
What linguists have told us about AI
We surveyed more than 800 linguists to understand how AI affects their work. The main themes were:
- Concern about ethics, environmental impact, job satisfaction and fair pay
- A clear message that linguists want to be involved, not left out
In response we have:
- Published our AI survey insights report
- Created a Linguist Board to help guide our approach
- Offered regular training, webinars and sustainability resources
We intend to conduct more research annually and will keep reporting our findings openly.
How we manage AI’s environmental footprint
AI comes with a real environmental cost, mainly due to energy use in data centres and the water needed to cool them.
Here is how we are tackling it:
- We estimate our AI-related emissions using our accredited carbon calculation partner, Climate Essentials
- We have invested in Voluntary Biodiversity Credits with Earthly. The project operates on degraded farmland within the South Downs National Park which has become unproductive and in need of regeneration. The project aims to restore the historic broadleaf woodland cover of the area, thus sequestering carbon, increasing biodiversity, and providing a home for over 1000 species and over 540 protected species in the area.
- By 2030, we aim to report on product-level emissions for Clara and Pronto and offset these emissions through Earthly’s High-Integrity Carbon Credits & Nature Based Solutions.
- We ask each supplier if they use renewable energy, report emissions, have a net zero target, whether they hold third-party environmental certifications and encourage them to take action.
- If their answers fall short, we’re prepared to switch suppliers.
What comes next?
On top of all the work we’re already doing to ensure that we’re using AI in the most responsible way possible, we’re always looking for new ways to improve things.
Here’s what’s coming next:
- Launching an AI ethics panel
- Moving to providers with green data hosting where needed
- Including AI emissions in our annual impact reporting
